Thoughts on Advertising
As I sat in a room listening to the television blare testimonials about televisions, I realized how important it is for each individual thing, person or product, to find a way to stand out in a gigantic mess of a crowd.
There is a story where a frenzied search for a missing letter ensues within the confines of a single room. The room ends up completely dismantled. Furniture is overturned, floorboards are lifted, glass is broken & couches are destroyed when all the while the letter is sitting on a mantle completely hidden by its blatancy. That letter, the thing that was so wanted & needed at that very moment, the thing that led to the destruction of a house, was right in plain sight.
When used properly, “words” can sell a five thousand dollar watch that literally does the exact same thing as a five dollar watch, it tells the time. Words can sell a type of bleach that does nothing different than the bleach three dollars less, it makes things white. Copy can change the perception of a product in such a way that changes the products actual uses in consumer’s mind. Because of an advertisement, a business man buys a Rolex to portray class & status, because of an advertisement a mother buys Clorox bleach to whiten her children’s socks.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mousetrap than his neighbor, though he built his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door.” Whoever can put together the best words today, tomorrow the beaten path will lead to that door. To conclude, ‘Because of an advertisement, I am here.
